How to land an NIL deal as a college athlete

Every college athlete has heard about NIL deals, but not many actually know how to land one of these deals. The truth surrounding these deals is that brands do not just throw money at star players. These companies look for athletes who have an online presence, know how to tell a story, and can align with their intended audience.

NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness. What does this mean for a college athlete? It means that they have the right to profit off their own personal brand. This includes sponsorships, social media posts, appearances, merchandise, and more.

Step By Step How to Land an NIL Deal

  1. Build a clear personal brand

When first getting started in developing a brand it is important to analyze yourself and which companies align with your views. Many athletes jump at the first opportunity they have to make an NIL deal. This leads to short term profits, but can later hurt your personal brand if the company is not in line with your personality or values.

When first building a brand I want you to forget about trying to make a quick paycheck. You should only be talking with companies who align with your morals, your personality, and your brand. I want you to make a list of the top 10 things that everyone needs to know about you. Now pick the most important 3 to 4 out of this list and that should be your brands focus. Those 3 to 4 traits are going to make your brand memorable and consistent long term.

2. Straighten up your social media

Before any brand signs you, the first place they are going to look is your social media. This can either open the door for opportunity or close it instantly.

As a college athlete your social media presence plays a huge role in landing NIL deals. An unorganized or unprofessional Instagram account can easily scare brands away. Your digital footprint is very real! Inappropriate comments or posts will damage your reputation with fans and potential sponsors.

I am not saying this to scare you, but to make it very clear how much of an impact your online presence has on your personal brand. When used properly, social media can be your greatest asset. You already have access to an entire fan base, make the most of it. Avoid using vulgar language, mature content, or illegal substances. Stay away from politics or controversial subjects.

Instead focus on content that reflects your originality and highlights who you are. For inspiration check out Travis Hunter or Caitlin Clarks Instagram pages. Both athletes do a great job of incorporating personality, professionalism, and authenticity.

Don’t forget LinkedIn! In the NIL landscape, professional connections are a necessity. A well organized LinkedIn profile shows brands that you’re serious about business and personal growth. You never know when a single connection could lead to a big opportunity.

3. Expand your reach

What brands look for in an NIL deal is an athlete that can expand their audience. The more people who know your name and engage with your content, the more valuable you are in the NIL market. Expanding your reach starts with being consistent on social media, collaborating with other athletes, and engaging with fans in a memorable way.

Your goal should be to build a presence that reaches beyond your sport and is a reflection of your personality. Here are a few ways to expand your reach and put yourself on a brands radar.

The most important step is to engage with your fans. It is not enough to post content without following up. Fans want to feel like they’re a part of your journey. You can make that happen by replying to a few comments on every post or sharing fan-made content. College athletes typically have higher fan engagement rates than traditional influencers. Use this to your advantage and find ways to make connections and grow engagement.

Next, post across multiple platforms. Posting short form video content across multiple platforms is the quickest way to gain exposure fast. Instagram reels, TikTok, and YouTube shorts have become some of the most effective tools to market a brand. Short videos hold viewers attention longer and tend to perform better with algorithms. Repurposing these clips across all platforms will ensure you hit the largest audience possible without needing to constantly create new content for every separate platform.

4. Don’t ignore local businesses

Be aware of local deals! It is easy to see big name athletes in bigtime NIL deals with brands like Nike, Adidas, EA sports and think you need a huge sponsorship to grow your brand. This is not at all the case, for most college athletes small local businesses are likely the best for growing a brand, especially if you are at a smaller university. Your audience is likely made up of locals or alumni of your school. If you can secure a deal with a locally owned and loved business this can greatly deepen fan loyalty, as people see you aligned with a company they already trust and support.

In fact, According to a study performed at the University of Florida athletes stated that they found deals not only with big brands but with local businesses like restaurants, boutiques, and community partners. They explained that “this entrepreneurial approach often required initiative and personal outreach”. Many of these athletes didn’t have any guidance and had to figure most of this out on their own. But, I want to leave you with a guide to help you with your pitch to your local company.

Guide for sales pitch:

5. Join the NIL marketplace

Joining your schools NIL marketplace is one of the easiest ways to start landing deals. An NIL marketplace is basically an online platform that connects student-athletes to fans and businesses to make deals off of their Name, Image, and Likeness.

Through your market place:

  • Create a profile that highlights your sport, social media reach, and personality
  • Get discovered by both local and national brands looking for college athletes to sponsor
  • Receive Offers for social media promotions, appearances, autograph signings, and more
  • Manage deals safely with the built in tools on many of these platforms that handle payments and make sure you are following both your school and NCAA’s rules

Many schools are partnered with Opendorse, Icon Source, and INFLCR which makes browsing opportunities, pitching yourself to companies, and tracking your earnings very simple.

Even if you’re not a star athlete local companies love working with athletes who have an influence on the community. Look for local gyms, restaurants, or apparel stores. Use these deals to build your personal brand, earn money, and gain experience working with sponsors before you graduate.

6. Follow the rules

Before jumping into an NIL deal, make sure you are familiar with the rules-that way you won’t risk your eligibility to compete. Every school and state has different NIL policies, and the NCAA also has its own set of guidelines for what you can and can’t do.

According to the NCAA, “Student-athletes should report NIL activities consistent with state law or school and conference requirements to their school”. make sure all your NIL activities are properly reported

Here’s a checklist to keep you on track:

  • Report every deal– Always disclose your NIL activities to your school’s NIL platform or compliance office.
  • Don’t use school logos or uniforms without permission– using official team logos, apparel, or marks without permission can violate university licensing agreements.
  • Do real work– The NCAA maintains a “commitment to avoid pay-for-play”. You have to actually perform a service (like promoting a product or making an appearance) so deals can’t be disguised as recruiting payments.
  • Be honest with brands– Deliver exactly what you agree on with each company. Following through builds trust and keep your reputation clean for future opportunities.
  • Don’t forget taxes– NIL money is considered income. Track your earnings and set aside a portion for taxes.

Following these rules will keep your brand looking professional and avoid legal issues down the road. NIL is a business – treat it like one. When you handle your brand the right way, you’ll attract quality partnerships from companies who respect your professionalism.

Conclusion

Landing an NIL deal isn’t initially about fame or money. It’s about creating a personal brand, developing real relationships, and learning to manage yourself as a business. Every athlete, no matter the level or school, has something valuable to offer.

Start small and focus on connecting with fans, and always follow the rules. With consistency, you can build up from working with local businesses to landing the big time deals that you see in the headlines.

Shape your future off the field using your Name, Image, and Likeness. These are powerful tools to build your career and your life, Use them wisely!
